How do you rate Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Wales?

The National Assembly for Wales is currently looking at whether the review of CAMHS – the ‘Together for Children and Young People Programme’ - is on track to deliver the ‘step-change’ in CAMHS services that is needed.

As part of this inquiry, the Children, Young People and Education Committee will consider what support is available at schools and colleges to help students feel more confident in talking about their emotional wellbeing and mental health.

We would like to collect the views of children and young people about the support available to them, and also the views of education professionals working in schools about the training and resources that are in place. We would like to hear from you and your students through completing a survey.

Survey for children and young people aged 11 - 18
English: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/YPCAMHS
Welsh: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/PICAMHS

Survey for education professionals
English: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/EPCAMHS
Welsh: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GPACAMHS

We would be extremely grateful if you could help us promote the opportunity to contribute with children, young people and teachers within the school through e-mail distribution, or through your intranet, social media channels and website. Survey responses will be entirely confidential and those contributing will be anonymised. Attached you will find a bilingual word document with information about the consultation, links to the survey and graphics you can use to help spread the message.

The Education and Youth Engagement team holds a range of engagement opportunities with young people to learn about the Assembly and to promote ways of contributing towards Assembly business. The Education officers are also available to come and hold a session with young people in order to complete the survey if you wish. You can arrange this by contacting our Public Information team by phoning them on 0300 200 6565 or emailing them cysylltu@cynulliad.cymru contact@assembly.wales

Paper copies of the survey are available with a freepost address for them to be returned. Please let us know if you would prefer this method.

The Committee will be promoting the survey through their twitter account: @SeneddCYPE and we will also be promoting it through our twitter account for children and young people @YourAssembly.
The survey will close on 15th October.
About the Assembly and Assembly Committees The National Assembly for Wales is the democratically elected body that represents the people of wales, makes laws for Wales, agrees Welsh taxes and holds the Welsh Government to account.
National Assembly Committees are made up of a mix of Assembly Members from different party groups in the National Assembly. They work together to look in detail at issues that matter to the people of Wales.
The Children, Young People and Education Committee looks at any issues affecting children, young people and the education system in Wales.
The Children, Young People and Education Committee depend on input from both young people and teachers and your views and experiences will contribute towards the Committee’s understanding of the support available for the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people.
You can keep up to date with their work by visiting assembly.wales/seneddcype or by following them on Twitter - @SeneddCYPE>.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at Thank you for your support.

PIONEER SCHOOL (Welsh only available)

disgyblion pleidleisio

Efallai bod trigolion Môn oedd yn mynd heibio Bodedern yr wythnos hon yn credu eu bod yn ôl yn y 1940au pan roedd plant, rhai wedi gwisgo fel faciwîs yn cerdded o Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern i neuadd y pentref. Roedd yn olygfa syfrdanol ac emosiynol iawn wrth iddynt seibio i syllu ar y torchau o gwmpas y gofeb. Yna bu i’r 'faciwîs' ddarllen o vlogs, dyddiaduron a llythyrau roeddent wedi ysgrifennu am eu bywydau ac yn gwrando ar y gerddoriaeth a gyfansoddwyd ganddynt yn arddull y cyfnod.

Trawsnewidiwyd y gampfa i fod yn stiwdio ffilm yn ystod yr wythnos. Creodd y disgyblion 'i-movies' yn llawn gwybodaeth o’r gwersi Mathemateg a Gwyddoniaeth. Roedd cyswllt amlwg rhwng ffitrwydd y galon, pwysau disgyblion, bwyta’n iach ac ymarfer corff. Datblygwyd sgiliau cymhwysedd digidol y disgyblion wrth greu cyflwyniad animeiddio yn defnyddio tirnodau Ynys Môn neu Baris. Cafwyd mapiau rhyngweithiol ar gyfer y ddwy ardal yn cyfleu ffeithiau a gwybodaeth.

Un arall o’r heriau oedd creu cardiau ‘Top Trumps’ am dirnodau Paris ag Ynys Môn. Cydweithiodd yr adran Ffrangeg, Celf a Daearyddiaeth i gasglu gwybodaeth a chreu delweddau. Tra yn y gweithdy, cafodd y disgyblion brofiad o greu daliwr i’r cardiau – oedd wedi ei greu o bren, metel ag acrylig. Cafodd pob disgybl gyfle i greu hysbyseb radio i hysbysebu dathliadau’r ysgol yn 40 oed. Yn y gwersi Addysg Grefyddol roeddynt wedi bod yn dysgu am fwydydd dathliadau gwahanol grefyddau ac arweiniodd hyn at wledd yn ystod y prynhawn.

Roedd hyn i gyd fel rhan o'r Rhaglen Arloesi y mae ychydig o ysgolion yng Nghymru yn rhan ohono. Eglurodd Pennaeth Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern, Mrs Catrin Jones Hughes;

“Fel Ysgol Arloesi mae Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern yn treialu gweithio’n drawsgwricwlaidd yn dilyn argymhellion Syr Graham Donaldson (‘Dyfodol Llwyddiannus’). Rydym wrth ein boddau yn gwneud y gwaith hwn ar ran Llywodraeth Cymru a diolchaf yn ddiffuant i’r holl athrawon a’r disgyblion am eu brwdfrydedd a’u hymroddiad.”

O dan gyfarwyddyd y dirprwy bennaeth Mrs Rowena Saunderson, gweithiodd athrawon mewn timau ar draws y cwricwlwm i gynhyrchu profiad holistig i ddisgyblion blwyddyn 7 gan barhau â'r dull thematig a brofir yn yr ysgolion cynradd. Dywedodd Mrs Saunderson,

“Bu’r gweithgor o Arloeswyr a’r adrannau yn cydweithio i addysgu’r disgyblion yn drawsgwricwlaidd. Bwriad hyn yw creu dysgwyr uchelgeisiol, creadigol sydd yn gyfranwyr mentrus. Gwelwyd cynnydd amlwg yn hyder a mwynhad y disgyblion yn y ffordd wahanol yma o ddysgu. Ein bwriad yw treialu ymhellach yn nhymor yr Haf.”

Following annual financial cutbacks, the school governing body intends to ask for a financial contribution towards the extracurricular activities during our skills and challenge week for year 7, 8 and 9.
We would ask for a contribution per household, not per child.
Before we start organising, we would appreciate your opinion on what would be a reasonable financial contribution. The range and diversity of activities depends on the amount of the financial contributions.

Message from the new Headteacher

Happy New Year to you all!

I came here as Deputy Headteacher nine years ago, and I've been particularly happy here since. It is a privilege therefore to be promoted to headteacher of the school after taking a valuable apprenticeship in the company of Mrs Annwen Morgan.

Thanks to the staff and pupils the school is in a good place. We had an Excellent ESTYN inspection in October 2014; we are in the GREEN category that sets us among the best schools in Wales- and our standards continue to rise. Our duty is to maintain this.

Every school will face a number of challenges in the forthcoming years in particular in regards to the upcoming changes in the curriculum. We are already preparing the way for this by leading a GCSE science project on Anglesey, leading a global learning programme, co-working on "Singapore" Mathematics, co-leading on literacy, and the latest good news is that we have been recognised by the Welsh Government as a PIONEER SCHOOL. This will enable us to be at the forefront in developing an attractive and meaningful curriculum from September 2018.

There are 4 purposes to the new curriculum and the four link very closely with my vision for Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern, which seeks to ensure that young people develop into ambitious and capable learners; enterprising, creative contributors, healthy, confident individuals and ethical, informed citizens. By being a learning school with an emphasis on continuous improvement and development we are treading the right path.
We have an exciting future ahead of us and we are ready for the challenge.

A little bit more April news
Special congratulations to three year 13 pupils, Elen Angharad Jones, Paige Bentley and Sara Hughes; the three have won important scholarships from the University of Bangor. Sara and Paige won the Bangor Merit Scholarship and Elen the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Scholarship. Well done ladies. Another busy pupil is Mared Owen from year 12, who has been successful with Young Farmers Organisation. Mared received first prize for public speaking under 21s and first prize across Wales as the best chairperson. Wow! Although busy preparing for exams, Bodedern’s pupils are also busy involved with extracurricular activities, such as the Les Miserables with the Urdd, Côr Ieuenctid Môn and Gwyl Drama Môn.

Well done Mared Edwards from year 10 for winning the Most Promising Actor award in the Charles Williams’ Drama Festival.

It was excellent to hear of Eurgain Lloyd’s successes once again, as she won an international dance competition in hip hop, as a result she has progressed to a higher class. She has also recently danced in a music video for the singer Dora Nadine in Bangor.

Head Lice

Following requests by a number of parents, here follows advice regarding home treatment for head lice by the NHS:

• Wash the hair using ordinary shampoo and apply plenty of conditioner, before using a wide-toothed comb to straighten and untangle the hair.
• Once the comb moves freely through the hair without dragging, switch to the louse detection comb. Make sure the teeth of the comb slot into the hair at the roots, with the bevel-edge of the teeth lightly touching the scalp.
• Draw the comb down to the ends of the hair with every stroke, and check the comb for lice.
• Remove lice by wiping or rinsing the comb.
• Work methodically through the hair, section by section, so that the whole head is combed through.
• Rinse out conditioner and repeat the combing procedure.
• Repeat the procedure on days three, six, nine, 12 and 15, so that you clear young lice as they hatch, before they have time to reach maturity.

Further advice may be found by following the link:
www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Head-lice

The school’s policy is to notify parents/guardians directly if we believe pupils have head lice.

Bro Alaw Launch 2015

Following a substantial grant from the Welsh Assembly, Bro Alaw has had a face lift over the summer holidays. The school uses the area daily. The purpose of the grant was to improve facilities for youth services and promote the use of Welsh in our communities.

Bro Alaw is been used by the local Youth Club, Young Farmers Club, Yr Urdd and other partnerships during the evenings. Through investing in a new kitchen and equipment for a music and recording studio, we hope these connections will continue to strengthen.

Here’s Mr Eryl Williams (Yr Urdd), Ms Laura Hughes (Local Goverment), Mrs Annwen Morgan, Ms Enid Williams (Youth Officer) a Mr Dafydd Idriswyn Roberts (Education Officer) during the launch.

National Network Pilot

The school has been part of a national network pilot regarding research into our pupils’ health.  The School Health Research  is a series of questions which enables us to have a better understanding of our pupils’ wellbeing.  Following recommendations from the pilot and our student council, we have established a very successful breakfast club during break time.  Our involvement with the network will continue.

This is additional to other pilot schemes running presently in the school, including the STEM scheme with career Wales.  Within the school’s careers department, pupils are encouraged to be aware of career opportunities in the work place related to mathematics, technology and engineering.

Congratulations to all the staff and pupils on achieving reaccreditation for the highest awards in the healthy school schemes. We are proud to have the logo on our website.

Our September prize giving ceremony was held on Thursday morning (19th of September).  It was great to see so many pupils been recognised for their hard work, academic achievements and excellent attendance.
